VFMA is dedicated to helping Virginia CFMs maintain their Certified Floodplain Manager (CFM®) credential by providing flexible ways to earn Continuing Education Credits (CECs)VFMA aims to host quarterly webinars covering key and relevant topics in floodplain management. These webinars are offered in addition to our Annual Conference, giving you more opportunities to earn CECs.

Flood Risk Reduction: ASCE Standards, Updates & Impacts

About the Webinar: Join us for a webinar to discuss the floodplain management implications of ASCE Standard 24-14 and the associated loading standards in ASCE 7-22, standards that are incorporated into statewide building codes.  With the recent adoption of ASCE Standard 24-24, the floodplain management impacts that may be incorporated into the building code into the near future (next several years).  We will walk through the updates, the potential impacts, and work to answer participant questions during a Q&A at the end of the presentation. 

About the Speaker: For the past 27 years, Doug has been a dedicated leader in floodplain management, leveraging his experience as a regional planner, Virginia state floodplain planner, and consultant to navigate significant shifts in the field. He has seen the evolution of essential tools, including advanced mapping, comprehensive mitigation and resilience planning, and evolving grant funding vehicles. Crucially, he understands the accelerating complexities of modern flooding challenges, such as increased rain intensity (IDF curves), sea level rise, and land subsidence, which contribute to more frequent and complex events like compound flooding.

In his current capacity, as the Flood Risk Reduction & Resilience Market Leader Mead & Hunt in Richmond, Virginia, Doug tackles these flood issues head-on, advising diverse communities nationwide on protecting habitable structures and critical infrastructure. His work focuses on identifying vulnerabilities, prioritizing innovative and sustainable solutions, and providing the necessary technical and funding expertise to implement effective resilience strategies.
