Be Prepared during Hurricane Season!

Flooding is the most comment and costly natural disaster, and Virginia’s hurricane season runs from June 1-November 30. Flooding for hurricanes can impact the entire state, not just coastal Virginia. VFMA encourages you to know your risk, get flood insurance, and be prepared for this year’s hurricane season!

Do you know your flood risk? Visit the Virginia Flood Risk Information System to learn if your property is located in a special flood hazard area. Even if you’re not in the special flood hazard area, you may have a low to moderate risk of flooding. More than 20% of flood insurance claims are from properties located outside of the special flood hazard area. Remember, anywhere it can rain, it can flood, so make sure you’re prepared!

Do you have flood insurance? One inch of water in your home can cause over $25,000 in damages, and flooding is not covered in most homeowners insurance policies. Flood insurance policies take 30 days to become effective, so don’t wait around to make sure you’re covered! If you live in a low risk area, you can get a Preferred Risk Policy for as low as $100-$400 per year! Learn more about flood insurance by visiting www.floodsmart.gov and call your agent today!

If you live in Coastal Virginia, make sure you know your Hurricane Evacuation Zone. Visit the Know Your Zone map to find out more: https://www.vaemergency.gov/hurricane-evacuation-zone-lookup/
